Broodmare prospects

Picture
Horses in this category are between the ages of 3-7.  In a commercial market a broodmare prospect with superb looks, strong pedigree, and an accomplished race record are highly sought after.  They generally hold value during market downturns.

Broodmares

This category of horse is between the ages of 3-20.  They have already been placed into service producing foals.  Developing a broodmare is a long-term investment.  The gestation period of a horse is 11-12 months.  Mares are capable of breeding every year but most will miss one out of every five years on average.

Weanlings/Yearlings

Investing in weanlings and yearlings requires a knowledge of growth patterns.  These young horses change almost daily so it is necessary to be able to anticipate how they will change.  Not all agents have the ability to do this.

Racehorses

The most capital intensive and risky proposition.  Before placing a horse in training it is best to locate a set of physical features that you think will attribute to a successful career.  They require constant monitoring as their value changes rapidly.

Stallion Seasons/Shares

Picture
Progeny results and stud-fees drive the thoroughbred business model.  When stallions become prolific producers their market demand increases significantly.  Owning a Season (right to breed during a stated year) or a Share (ownership interest with a right to breed every year) provides an opportunity to control an asset that has limited availabilities.
